Unnoticed for a generation, a legendary and mysterious figure from the decade after Stonewall has been quietly living in Europe. Before Mapplethorpe there was Rex. Just as Tom of Finland realised and gave form to a new ideal of gay masculinity for the generation before him, Rex prepared the way for Mapplethorpe and the modern fetish community.
Martin of Holland presents a collection of unusual and often disturbing gay art. This is no place for children or bigots. Martin doesn't suggest his images should be followed, but are a fantasy.

Rex is a living American artist and illustrator closely associated with homosexual fetish art of s and s New York and San Franscisco. He avoids photographs and does not discuss his personal life. His drawings influenced gay culture though graphics made for famous nightclubs including the Mineshaft and his influence on artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe.
These places offered a home to a man who, from an early age, was part of a community whose members could only truly be themselves in the embrace of the shadows. Sex was the object of the exercise, not drafting skills. Those were pornographic dirty pictures, plain and simple; nothing else.

Yes, some of his work is so hot, such that since you rightly mentioned that 'this blog does not include gay content', I won't even describe some of the best of the very extreme ones, which I totally adore. There was a gallery show of Male Homosexual Artists at a gallery somewhere between the Village and SoHo, and I saw some of the actual pieces finally. Love his work and have been turned on by it for years.
The majority of this art in this retrospective has never been allowed public exhibition due to government censorship and the scourge of political correctness. To honor his 50th anniversary of producing iconic Homo-erotica for the Gay fetish world, Jeroen van Lievenoogen and his team have honored REX with the largest exhibition of his art ever held. Now in his vintage years, this much censored and ignored artist is to be honored with this rare European exhibit, which highlights five decades of his pioneering contribution to gay history.

He avoids photographs and does not discuss his personal life, his drawings influenced gay culture though graphics made for famous nightclubs including the Mineshaft and his influence on artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe. Much censored, he has remained a shadowy figure saying that his drawings "defined who I became" and that there are "no other 'truths' out there".
Rex' pointillistic style is finely detailed and exquisitely rendered, the stark black and white draws your eye and holds you transfixed. His fetish subject matter shows a dark and sometimes disturbing world that fascinates even as it repulses, and leaves you wanting more. But since Rex is a very private - even reclusive - artist, more is not very easy to obtain. And when you find it, it's often of poor quality due to repeated copying of inferior original versions.
